“Life begins at the end of your Comfort Zone”
– Neale Donald Walsh
It is a fact that if you want success in your life, you will not achieve it by simply doing what you are doing everyday – working. For getting success, you need to get out of your Comfort Zone.
So, why are people so reluctant to come out of their Comfort Zone?
Comfort Zone is a situation where one feels safe or at ease. We love to stay in this zone because there is no extra effort required and more importantly, it is known to us. All of us are afraid to get out of this very cosy zone which comprises of our regular personal and professional life. We are afraid of the unknown. So, we don’t want change. We feel happy staying here – till something forces us out!
What forces us out can be our own thought process or our changing circumstances.
It is okay to be afraid
Being afraid means you are about to do something brave. So, people who manage their fear and come out of their Comfort Zone proceed towards success. When you are out of the Comfort Zone, you are in the unknown area. This forces you to think, to innovate because you want to stay there. And once you get the taste of success, you really don’t want to go back. I realised this from my experience.
My side of the story
After being an employee for 17 years, I suddenly decided to start out on my own. When you are an employee, you are in your Comfort Zone because the organisation is there to protect you. If you work well, your monthly salary is assured. So, you really do not have much to worry.
But when you start out on your own, your fight for survival begins. Suddenly, you are in an alien world where you learn, make mistakes, face failure before you achieve success.
Having worked as an HR Manager, I have never been keen on marketing; neither did I ever feel the need to learn. When I had to visit clients, I never met them alone – there was always someone with me. And I never thought that I could go alone – that was way out of my Comfort Zone.
But when I started on my own, I had no option but to market myself. I had to come out of my Comfort Zone.
Believe me, I was very scared to meet prospective clients. I didn’t know what to say or what to do on my own. But I did it.
I overcame my fears, did some learning and started meeting the clients. My first client meeting was successful and I soon got the contract. After regularly meeting clients for few months, now this has become a part of my Comfort Zone and I am no longer afraid – because it is no longer unknown.
Now, that I have understood where my success will come from, I seek opportunities to get out of my Comfort Zone. I know I will be afraid, I may face failure too. But that will only take me a step towards success.
If you want to succeed and need help to come out of your Comfort Zone, here are a few pointers –
- Understand that it will never be easy, with each day it will get tougher. With every step comes the decision to take another and there will always be a lot of forces to pull you back to your
Comfort Zone. You have to decide what you want.
- Everybody has fear – you cannot be not afraid. You have to know how to manage fear by sharing your concerns with others.
- Knowledge helps you in facing the unknown. When you think of doing something which is not known to you, read a lot about what you are thinking of doing.
- Innovation takes you forward, think of new ways of doing things
When you try to do something new, failure is almost inevitable. Do not feel disappointed and give up, learn from your failure. Rebound resiliently!
So, ready to come out of your Comfort Zone?
Come, success is waiting for you…
