Anupam’s day at Office
On Tuesday, last week, Anupam went to office with great zeal. He had to submit a project 2 days later. “It is a great opportunity for me to advance my career”, he thought. “The clients are highly respectable in the industry. Doing this project well may also mean getting the due promotion I desire.” It was great for him to hear from his boss that he was the best person to handle this project, as he has showcased his vast knowledge and understanding about Finance in so many occasions.
Nevertheless, this was Anupam’s first big project and stress was huge. Moreover, he had to handle a team of 10 other people, who could not always catch up with his speed. Different people in the team had different ways to do things and that sometimes countered the team’s effort.
Some people in the team were Anupam’s colleagues, rather than his subordinates. They had some cold power clashes with Anupam. Sweet words they said to him. “Wow Sir Anupam! We shouldn’t call you by name now, right? You are getting your promotion soon.” And Sheena casually mentioned at lunch time, “You know, the world is not such an easy place. Backstabbers are the only ones who can make their way to the top.”
These words badly stung Anupam. Just a while ago, these were the people he considered his good friends … he shared so much of his life with them. Day after day, he felt stressed, but he kept quiet.
The day of the project submission was coming close … very close, with only 2 days to go. The pressure was also increasing. Anupam knew he couldn’t keep a great deal of expectation from his colleagues, so he has kept his hopes almost entirely on his juniors.
On Tuesday morning
Anupam had to go somewhere for some work on the project. He would return to office only after lunch. Therefore, on Monday evening, he assigned some work to other members of his team. He had mentioned that as the deadline is very close, the work must be done at any cost and if anyone had any problem, they can give him a call for help.
Anupam was worried that since he would have to meet some people in the morning on Tuesday, the calls from office may turn detrimental, but he had no other option. But, thankfully for him (only till the afternoon), Anupam did not receive any call and his meetings was successful.
He said to himself, “Wow! People finally saw my point, now that the outcome is so close. These people, who were just not ready to work responsibly till now, are doing so. They are working by themselves, while letting me do my part comfortably. When I return to office today, it would actually be great to see so many of us working seriously on a project that I am heading; it’s a fantasy fulfiled. I can’t wait for the D-Day.”
Alas! When he returned to office, he was shell-shocked to see that the work assigned were not done and everyone seems to be very casual and cheerful. The man who sits just behind his cubicle was laughing like crazy and having a post-lunch long chat with somebody. Some other people were busy with the lunchtime discussions about some movie that released last Friday, that hasn’t quite come to a conclusion yet.
On asking for the reason the job wasn’t done, people answered that they did not understand the things that were to be done properly and they were confused.
“WHY, ON EARTH, DIDN’T YOU GIVE ME A CALL?” Anupam shouted at one of his juniors, Sumita.
A meek, but casual, reply came, “You know, we thought we would be disturbing you with a call, so we thought ‘Just let it be!’ Plus, we were quite confused, so the call would have taken a lot of time.”
Now Anupam turns to his colleague, Dheeraj, for an answer and he seemed to completely support Sumita in this instance.
“IF YOU WERE CONFUSED ABOUT ONE THING, COULDN’T YOU DO THE OTHER THINGS? ARE YOU CRAZY? DON’T YOU REALISE THE DEADLINE IS JUST DAY AFTER TOMORROW?”
“See Anupam, I did not understand quite a few things and I told the other people to do them, but if they don’t, that’s not my problem. And please don’t shout! It’s your project, your deadline, not ours!”
Anupam was traumatized, he had a nervous breakdown … he could see his dream shattered. And he blurted out all kinds of stuff to his team. What could he do? He had already been so stressed for so long. Now, he is not only stressed, he is angry … very very ANGRY! He wanted to give up on himself and the whole world … He felt like a complete failure … He felt wronged … and he felt a lot of other things he knew not of. Anupam banged his head on the desk and almost started crying.
He wanted to go away!
Then the manager arrived
Next, after about 15 minutes, “Anupam!” came a stern voice. “This is an office and it demands some decorum. Do you realise that? Well I think you didn’t! The organisation gave you some opportunities and some good words. I wanted to see you go up the ladder. But you couldn’t handle your success, could you? You couldn’t maintain the minimum respect of the office you work in. You stooped so low with the kinds of words you used and you dragged the organisation down with you.”
“NOW, CAN YOU PLEASE SPEAK UP FOR GOD’S SAKE?”
Anupam was quiet. He could not speak after his manager, Sudhir, said such words to him. Indeed, this was the man who game him so many opportunities to showcase his talent and he was also the one to praise him time after time.
Sudhir loved Anupam like his younger brother and respected him for his talent. But was he wrong to say such things?
20 people from his office went together and complained to him audaciously for 15 minutes. They almost questioned him for giving somebody like Anupam such opportunities, while leaving the others behind.
“Why, Anupam? Why did you let me down?” was the only thing Sudhir thought. This was the only reason Sudhir was so angry.
“WILL YOU OPEN YOUR DAMN MOUTH, ANUPAM? I AM, HERE, SPEAKING TO YOU?”
Sudhir shouted so loudly that Anupam was jolted into consciousness. He started gathering words … He didn’t know what to say.
Sudhir asked him or rather urged him, albeit with a loud voice, to speak up his side of the story, but Anupam was just not in a state of mind to explain anything to anyone.
Their eyes became moist!
They both felt let down!
Sudhir stamped back to his room not being able to control his emotions.
Anupam left office, without informing anybody, thinking of not coming back there again.
